“ These are strange times. There is so much we are told we can’t do because of the Covid 19 virus. Anytime I am told I can’t do something I start thinking about my cousin Craig. He is about a year older than me. When he was two years old he contracted Polio and was never able to walk again. I prayed for him during my childhood that he would be healed and truly believed that one day I would see his crutches leaning against a wall at some church because he was walking, but that never happened. I wondered why he was never healed and what I could learn from it. In the New Testament I read of so many healings and even the raising of the dead, but there was no healing for my cousin.
As I grew older and I thought about my time growing up with Craig I remembered how much of an inspiration he was for me. Craig did not let his handicap stop him. We would go out and ride our bicycles and Craig would want to come along. How does someone crippled with polio ride a two wheeled bike? Well, he came up with way to do it. He replaced the pedal with a large bolt and attached a pole. He would put one hand on the handle bars and use his other to push that pole up and down to power his bike. I tried it but couldn’t get the hang of it. But Craig rode with us everywhere. May be that was Craig’s calling in life. He taught me to ask questions and figure out different ways to do things. Can you also learn from that? Life is full of bends in the road and even detours, but we are not to give up.
“The Men Sharing Our Faith” group wants to invite all men in the parish to our meeting including those men who are disabled like my cousin Craig. We will use Zoom. This keeps everyone safe and excludes no one.
